Professional Learning

  • Education is starting a new era. We continue to learn more about the Common Core State Standards, CEL 5 Dimensions for Instructional Framework, the New Evaluation System (TPEP) model, the new state assessment "Smarter Balance.” As for the 2013-2014 school year, early release Fridays are designated for Professional Development time (concentrated staff training). Our staff continues to train and improve while developing new resources to support the evolving education system.

OSPI School Safety Center–This page is for training and professional development opportunities, either for download or in-person, that are relevant to school safety. Check the Conference and Trainings List for others around the state or around the country throughout this coming year.

Educational Leadership (CEL) Five Dimensions (5D) Instructional Framework and New Evaluation (TPEP) Model
The teachers continue to refine their understanding and application of the district instructional model. We continue working with the dimension of "Assessment for Student Learning.” Weekly staff meetings focus on individual sub-dimensions as teachers learn more about applying this knowledge at the "proficient” and "distinguished” levels in their classrooms. The entire district staff engaged in a district "Data Snap” that gathered baseline data about implementation of the dimension of "Assessment for Learning.”

Incident Command System (ICS) Training: RCW 28A.320.125 requires all principals to be certified on the Incident Commander System. If you have already passed the exam for this course, you are not required to complete the exam again in order to be current in your training by FEMA EMI records.

This class introduces participants to the Incident Command System (ICS) and how it may be used to manage emergencies or disasters in the school setting, and is the equivalent of the FEMA IS-100sc curriculum. Building principals in Washington are required to be trained and certified in ICS. Students who take this class will be adequately prepared to test for certification through the FEMA website, meeting the certification requirement. Topics covered include school safety planning requirements, history of the ICS system, roles and responsibilities of incident commanders and other staff positions, common terminology, application of ICS to school emergencies, guidelines for establishing a command post, and an overview of the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
